How this calculator works
Choose time or distance. In distance mode, duration is distance ÷ speed. A speed-based Compendium MET estimate is used for gross energy; subtracting 1 MET gives energy above resting metabolism.
A worked example
Body weight: 70 · Weight unit: Kilograms · Walking speed: 5 · Speed unit: km/h · Duration input: Time · Duration in minutes: 30
- Gross energy
- 140 kcal
- Active energy above rest
- 103 kcal
- Distance
- 2.5 km
These are illustrative inputs, not personal recommendations.
Common questions
Are active calories the same as total calories?
No. Gross energy includes what you would burn at rest during that time. Active energy subtracts that resting component.
How should I use the result?
Average MET values do not capture individual fitness, hills, carrying a load or weather. Treat active and gross calories as different quantities.
