How this calculator works
The selected ACSM walking or running equation estimates oxygen cost at your speed and grade. Solving the same equation at zero grade gives an equivalent flat speed. Vertical gain uses belt distance × sin(arctan(grade)).
A worked example
Walking speed: 5 · Speed unit: km/h · Duration in minutes: 30 · Incline (%): 5 · Gait: Walking
- Equivalent flat speed
- 9.5 km/h
- Equivalent flat pace
- 6:19 /km
- Elevation gain
- 125 m
- Estimated intensity
- 5.5 MET

Common questions
Is a 5% grade the same as 5 degrees?
No. Grade is rise divided by horizontal distance, multiplied by 100. A 5% grade is about 2.9 degrees.
How should I use the result?
Equivalent oxygen cost is not an exact race pace prediction. Gait, handrail use, treadmill calibration and the equations’ speed ranges affect the comparison.
