How this calculator works
Gross kilocalories are MET × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200 × minutes. Active energy subtracts 1 MET of resting cost. The selected MET is an approximate Compendium value for the labelled activity and intensity.
A worked example
Body weight: 70 · Weight unit: Kilograms · Duration in minutes: 30 · Activity and approximate intensity: Walking, moderate (3.8 MET)
- Gross energy
- 140 kcal
- Active energy above rest
- 103 kcal

Common questions
Why do activities at the same MET show the same energy?
MET is the intensity input to this simplified model. At the same weight and duration, the model gives the same result even when the activity type differs.
How should I use the result?
Averages cannot measure your individual oxygen use or technique. The 2024 adult Compendium is intended for adults without conditions that significantly alter energy expenditure.
