How this calculator works

Karvonen targets equal resting HR + intensity × (maximum HR − resting HR). Five bands span 50% to 100% of heart-rate reserve in 10 percentage-point intervals. The resting measurement is also displayed for reference.

A worked example

Measured resting heart rate (bpm): 60 · Measured maximum heart rate (bpm): 190

Resting heart rate
60 bpm
Easy
125 to 138 bpm
Endurance
138 to 151 bpm
Moderate
151 to 164 bpm
Hard
164 to 177 bpm
Very hard
177 to 190 bpm

Common questions

How should I measure resting heart rate?

Use a consistent rested state and average several readings. Do not use a post-workout pulse as your resting measurement.

How should I use the result?

A single resting heart rate does not diagnose cardiovascular fitness or disease. Medication, illness, stress and measurement conditions affect these numbers. Use an appropriately obtained maximum heart rate.
