How this calculator works
The ACSM walking equation is VO₂ = 0.1s + 1.8sg + 3.5; running uses 0.2s + 0.9sg + 3.5. Speed s is metres per minute and grade g is a decimal. Oxygen cost is converted at approximately 5 kcal per litre.
A worked example
Body weight: 70 · Weight unit: Kilograms · Walking speed: 5 · Speed unit: km/h · Duration in minutes: 30 · Incline (%): 3 · Gait: Walking
- Gross energy
- 172 kcal
- Active energy above rest
- 135 kcal
- Elevation gain
- 75 m
- Estimated intensity
- 4.7 MET

Common questions
Does holding the rails change the estimate?
Yes. Supporting body weight on the rails changes the work performed. The standard equation cannot measure that reduction.
How should I use the result?
Use walking at approximately 3 to 6 km/h and running above approximately 8 km/h. Steady-state uphill exercise without holding handrails is assumed; slower running, faster walking and intervals reduce accuracy.
