Why do workouts feel harder before your period?
The days before a period, the luteal phase, are where most people say training stops feeling easy. The same weight moves slower. The same run costs more. Nothing in your programme changed, so it feels like a personal failure. It usually is not.
What people commonly notice
Reported patterns in this stretch include lower energy, worse sleep, more perceived effort at the same pace, and a body that runs warmer. Bloating and mood changes are common too. These are observations, not a mechanism: this article is not going to tell you which hormone did what, because the honest answer is that the research is far less settled than the infographics suggest.
What is actually measurable
Two things are worth separating:
- Perceived effort often rises. The session feels harder.
- Output may or may not fall. The weight on the bar, or your pace, sometimes barely moves.
That gap matters. If your numbers hold while the effort feels higher, you are not weaker; the session just costs more. That is worth knowing before you cut your training in half.
How to train through it
- Keep the session, shrink the ambition. Same movement, one less set, or 10% less weight. You keep the habit and the log entry.
- Move the hardest session if you can. If a heavy day and this week collide, and your schedule is flexible, swap them. If it is not flexible, train anyway and expect it to feel worse than it looks.
- Judge the week, not the day. One heavy-feeling session proves nothing.
- Stop treating rest as failure. A logged rest day is data. It also keeps your streak honest.
Then check whether it is actually true for you
This is the part most advice skips. “Luteal is harder” is a population average, and you are not a population. Some people are measurably strongest in this phase.
Log your sessions for three or four cycles and look at what your own numbers did. If a real pattern appears, plan around it: put the demanding sessions where you tend to be strongest. If the ranges overlap, you have learned something equally useful, which is that you can ignore the calendar and train by feel.
Lunia does that reading for you, and it stays quiet when the data is not clear enough to claim anything. Start with how to start a cycle-aware training log, or check whether strength really peaks in the follicular phase.
See your own pattern, not a hormone theory.
Lunia is a free, cycle-aware training log. Log your sessions and watch how you actually perform across your cycle.
