Irregular periods or on birth control?
Most cycle apps quietly assume a textbook 28-day cycle and a predictable period. Plenty of people do not have either, and are then told, in effect, that the app is not for them. It should be.
If your cycle is irregular
Irregular cycles make prediction harder. They do not make logging harder, and logging is the part that produces value.
Two things help:
- Use an app that scales its phase estimate to your own logged cycle length instead of a fixed 28-day model, so a 33-day cycle is not silently squeezed into 28. (How to work out your cycle length covers the counting.)
- Judge patterns over more cycles rather than fewer. With variable lengths, three cycles is a hint and six is a story.
If you are on hormonal birth control
Combined pills, hormonal IUDs and implants change the picture in an obvious way: for many people the natural cycle they would otherwise have is suppressed, and any bleed is a withdrawal bleed rather than a natural period.
What that means practically:
- Logging still works exactly the same. Sessions, sets, runs, PRs, streaks: none of that depends on a cycle at all.
- Phase-based analysis has less to find, because the thing it looks for may not be happening.
- An honest app should say so rather than manufacture a phase pattern from suppressed cycles.
Lunia’s Cycle Patterns needs enough natural-cycle data to find anything, and it tells you plainly when there is not enough rather than dressing noise up as a signal.
If your period has stopped
Periods can stop for many reasons, and some of them are worth medical attention rather than an app. Persistent absence of periods, especially alongside heavy training or under-eating, is a genuine reason to talk to a doctor. Lunia is a training log, not a diagnostic tool, and it will never tell you what a missing period means.
What still pays off
Even with no usable cycle signal at all, a training log still gives you: what you actually did, how much of it, how it trended, your records, and an honest picture of the weeks you skipped. That is most of the value, and none of it requires a textbook cycle.
If a natural cycle does return, the phase tagging picks up again from the dates you log, and the history you already built is still there.
See your own pattern, not a hormone theory.
Lunia is a free, cycle-aware training log. Log your sessions and watch how you actually perform across your cycle.
