Cycle syncing workouts: what the evidence says
“Cycle syncing” is the idea that you should match your training to your menstrual phase: heavy lifting in one window, gentle movement in another. It is everywhere, it is confidently presented, and it is worth understanding what part of it is supported.
Where the idea comes from
The reasoning is straightforward: hormones change across the cycle, hormones affect muscle and recovery, therefore training should change too. Every step sounds sensible, and that is exactly why the conclusion spread so fast.
What the research supports, and what it does not
Reviews of cycle phase and exercise performance keep reaching a careful verdict: any average effect is small, and the studies disagree with each other. Sample sizes are often tiny, phase identification is often approximate, and individual differences swamp the group averages.
So the honest summary is not “cycle syncing is nonsense” and not “science says train heavy in your follicular phase”. It is narrower and more useful:
- There is no reliable population-wide schedule that tells you what to lift and when.
- There are real individual patterns, and some people have strong ones.
- The only way to know which group you are in is to measure yourself.
Why a generic calendar can be worse than nothing
Two people can have opposite patterns and cancel each other out in a study’s average. If you follow a generic plan built on that average, you might be going easy in the exact week you are strongest. Worse, when the plan does not match how you feel, most people conclude something is wrong with them.
There is also an opportunity cost: time spent following a chart is time not spent building the habit that actually drives progress.
The version that works
Keep the useful half of cycle syncing and drop the prescriptive half.
- Log what you actually do, every session, whatever it is.
- Let your phase be recorded automatically rather than planning around it.
- After three or four cycles, read your own chart. If a clear pattern appears, schedule around it. If nothing clear appears, train by feel and stop worrying about the calendar.
That is the entire design of Lunia: it never hands you a hormone theory, it shows your own numbers phase by phase, with the uncertainty visible, and it says “no clear pattern yet” when that is the truth.
See your own pattern, not a hormone theory.
Lunia is a free, cycle-aware training log. Log your sessions and watch how you actually perform across your cycle.
